More about Stony Brook BEE Online

What is Stony Brook BEE (Bachelor of Electrical Engineering) Online?

Our goal is to provide a complete online Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering by offering upper division online courses. Approval by the New York State Education Department is being sought for this degree. Until that time, these courses carry Stony Brook credits but are not part of an approved degree program. At the present time the successful applicants are enrolled as non-matriculating students. All courses offered under this initiative are offered as individual courses. We expect the approval to be granted during the Spring 2009.

Students will only be admitted as matriculated students after we receive New York State approval for the degree program. At that point, online courses taken at the non-matriculated status will be counted towards the degree program, provided a satisfactory course grade is accomplished.

All courses, materials, tests, labs, discussions, advising and contact with faculty will occur completely online. However some students may be required to come to campus or to meet with a local organization (such as ABET, IEEE, to verify their capstone design projects.

Who should enroll in these courses?

  • Are you one of the tens of thousands of workers in American industry who possess associate degrees in related fields, or who are working their way toward completion of bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering? This online degree program will provide a flexible, convenient opportunity for you to work towards your four-year degree, while continuing in your current job.
  • Are you interested in exploring an engineering education or looking for specific knowledge and skills in electrical engineering? Our course selection will allow you to broaden your engineering horizons.

A successful BEE on line student should possess some specific qualities such as:

  • Should be a motivated and self-disciplined person.
  • Manage his/her time efficiently.
  • Have a strong professional, personal, or educational need to take this course.
  • Work and study well individually and do not need the context of a physical class or face to face interaction with my professor and classmates to complete the work.
  • Have sufficient access to a computer and the internet to work many hours a week online and I am experienced using computers and the Internet.
  • Have already completed all the pre-requisites for the course(s) I wish to take.
  • understand that an online course requires as many hours as an on-campus course – or more.

Will these degrees be accredited by ABET?

The universal accreditor of engineering programs in the U.S. is ABET -- Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology.  ABET accreditation is only granted after the first class of students graduates from the program. Therefore, this online degree is not yet an ABET accredited program.  We plan to seek ABET accreditation upon the graduation of the first class of students.

In designing our program we have been in close contact with and followed the strict advice and guidelines of ABET to help ensure eventual accreditation.

The online courses are taught by the same faculty who offer these courses on campus, so you are assured of a high-quality, challenging, engineering education completely equivalent to what you would receive on campus.

What will my diploma say?

Upon approval from NY State (pending), the diploma will read  Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Online at Stony Brook University.

Will my prior work or courses count for credit towards the BE degree?

Transfer and acceptance of all prior credit will be approved on an individual basis. Each student’s coursework and work experience will be reviewed by a Stony Brook undergraduate adviser.

Will I be allowed to take courses on the campuses, too?

Online students who wish to take on-campus courses will have to apply separately.  Standard admission policy applies and credits taken online maybe transferred subject to standard transfer course evaluation procedures.

If I am a student currently on-campus, can I take these online courses?

This program is designed for students who wish to complete their entire degree online. On-campus students will have to apply and meet all admission requirement. Students will also assume on-line tuition liability in addition to on-campus tuition, In general, we do NOT encourage on-campus students to pursue online courses.

What will it cost?

Please see Tuition and Fees Section for exact amounts.

The fees are charged for administration and technology just as there might be fees on a campus. After the New York State approval, discounts for veterans, military personnel, or other special needs students will follow Stony Brook campus policies.
